Exterior: Window Flashing and Caulk
Flashings are typically not caulked along the horizontal portions of a window. This is a fairly common installation flaw, but it should be corrected to prevent moisture problems in the house.
Why Is Caulking the Top of a Flashing Improper?
Caulking the top of an exterior flashing (or the bottom, in some cases) prevents the flashing from shedding water as designed. When the caulk breaks down or cracks, moisture gets trapped against the house and cannot drain off the flashing. In most cases, the fix is to remove the caulk and make sure the flashing is installed correctly.
As with any installation issue, check with your window or siding manufacturer, or a qualified exterior contractor, for best practices for your specific siding.
