Plumbing: Galvanized Water Pipe

HomeSight Inspections

Plan on Upgrading Down the Road

Galvanized pipe will most likely need to be replaced at some point. There is no way to improve a galvanized pipe once it has lost water pressure; replacement is the only fix.

What Is the Issue?

Galvanized pipe is steel pipe with a zinc coating. As the pipe ages, the inside corrodes and narrows, which eventually reduces water pressure.

Copper and Galvanized Connections

When two dissimilar metals are in contact, galvanic corrosion can occur. This process can speed up corrosion of the pipe. It is most often seen where copper and galvanized pipe meet at a fitting. Special dielectric fittings can be used where needed to keep the two metals from touching directly.
